Mahama’s corrupt record in Government draws Rawlings away from NDC campaign

For the first time since the formation of the party, the NDC is struggling to get its founder Flt Lt (Rtd) Jerry John Rawlings to join the campaign.

The party’s campaign in past elections had revolved around the former President and his role in the so-called “Trinity -John, the Father, John, the Son and John, the holy spirit” that helped the NDC win the 2008 elections cannot be underestimated.

However, with the party seeking to return to power after its biggest defeat in 2016, it appears the only person who holds the umbilical cord of the NDC,  J.J Rawlings would not campaign for the John Mahama ticket.

Dr. Ekwow Spio- Garbrah,  a leading member of theNational Democratic Congress (NDC) recently observed that that the party must look for the founder and leader of the party, former President Jerry John Rawlings to join the 2020 electioneering campaign.

He urged the party to do a critical search and find out why former President Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings had moved away from NDC party’s activities over the past years, which contributed to the defeat of the party in the 2016 elections.

One thing remains clear, the Ex-President may have given up on the party he founded because of its current leadership and the flag bearer for the 2020 elections.

Mr. Rawlings is on record to have labeled the John Mahama’s tenure between 2012-2016 as the most corrupt in the history of the country.

According to Rawlings, when Akufo-Addo took over from the John Mahama goverment in 2017, the country was already sinking deep in practice of corruption with impunity.

“By the time this administration came into office, the country was literally drowning in the practice of corruption with impunity. The NPP has therefore inherited national corruption at its worst,” Rawlings is on record to have stated.

The NDC founder made these assertions when he received a delegation of political leaders from Sierra Leone, led by former Vice-President, Chief Sam-Sumana.

This was not the first time the former President has castigated the Mahama-administration  and the NDC. Rawlings had in the past expressed disgust about what he claimed was serious corruption in the previous Mahama administration, criticizing the members for putting their interests first.

Since the NDC lost the 2016 general elections, the ex-president has criticized the leadership of the party – with Mahama at the receiving end – for engaging in various acts of corruption, including vote-buying in internal NDC elections.

This has pitched him against some elements in the party, who are not satisfied with his public criticism of the leadership of the party. He had also described members of the party as greedy and selfish, saying they are part of the reason for the ‘poverty’ in Ghana today.

In his private engagements with party supporters, Former President Rawlings has called on citizens to help the current government fight corruption since this government alone cannot succeed in doing so.
